(VIDEO)Esther Smith reveals ‘Nsuro’ draws inspiration from Shaggy’s classic hit ‘Angel’
February 20, 2026Ghanaian gospel icon Esther Smith has revealed the surprising inspiration behind her hit song Nsuro—Jamaican-American artist Shaggy’s 2000s chart-topper Angel. In an interview with blogger Kobby Kyei, she explained how the secular track’s melody sparked her spiritually charged anthem.
“There’s a guy called Shaggy. I got my song from his—‘Girl, you’re my angel, you’re my darling angel.’ The string arrangement of that song motivated mine: ‘Nsuro wai, nsuro wai, nsuro nea otamfo bɛyɛ.’ That’s where I drew the inspiration,” Smith disclosed. Despite Angel’s romantic theme, she identified a divine resonance in its musical structure, transforming it into a gospel declaration of faith.
Smith attributes her unique sound during her career peak to disciplined prayer and deep biblical study. Unlike peers who rushed releases, she prioritized spiritual discernment, ensuring each song aligned with her calling. “None of my songs across ten albums were written with pen and paper,” she shared, describing her creative process as a divine download from the Holy Spirit.
The Nyame Aguanma singer’s approach underscores her belief in transcending musical boundaries. “Spiritual alignment lets inspiration flow from unexpected places,” she noted, emphasizing how God can repurpose secular art for worship. Her revelation offers insight into the fluidity of gospel creativity—where a dancehall rhythm can birth a hymn of devotion.
Fans have praised Smith’s transparency, celebrating Nsuro’s enduring impact since its release. The track remains a staple in Ghanaian churches, proving that divine inspiration often defies genre limits. As Smith puts it, “When God gives a song, it doesn’t matter where the melody begins—it’s where He takes it that counts.”
